Global Contexts, Key Concepts, and Related Concepts at New Pathways Academy
At New Pathways Academy, the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) helps students connect what they learn in class to the real world through Global Contexts. Global Contexts are important themes that guide students to explore big questions like: “Who am I?” “How is everything connected?” and “What are my responsibilities to others?” They give meaning to learning by encouraging students to think beyond the classroom and reflect on their place in a global community.
Our students, who come from vibrant and diverse backgrounds in the Bronx and beyond, are uniquely positioned to explore these big ideas presented in the Global Contexts. Whether studying migration in Orientation in Space and Time or discussing fairness and access to resources in Fairness and Development, students connect their personal experiences and cultures to global challenges.
In addition to Global Contexts, learning at NPA is shaped by Key Concepts and Related Concepts. Key Concepts are big ideas like change, systems, and communication that help students understand important themes across all subjects. Related Concepts are subject-specific ideas, like balance in Physical Education or audience in Language and Literature, that deepen students’ understanding within each class.
By using Global Contexts, Key Concepts, and Related Concepts together, we ensure that learning at NPA is meaningful, connected, and prepares students to think critically, act ethically, and contribute to a changing world.
